Are you finding yourself knee deep in laundry? Kids coming back from camp with suitcases full of dirty clothes? Didn't do laundry for 9 days? Your laundry room is one of the hardest working spaces in your home. With a streamlined and organized laundry process, laundry time will be a lot smoother. You may surprise yourself and not dread doing laundry.
Tip #1: Dedicate a Spot for Dirty Laundry Drop-Offs
Firstly, you need a designated spot for the dirty laundry to go to. The key is, it must be a spot that works for you and your family. For some families, having the laundry hampers in the laundry room works really well. Their family knows to put their clothes in the right hamper in the laundry room. In my house that would be a disaster! My kids need a laundry basket within arm's reach or else they drop their clothes on the floor. You need to assess what will work for your family? Will it be a hamper in each bathroom, one in each room, or a family one presorted in the laundry room?
Tip #2: Select Appealing Storage for All Belongings
Once you have the laundry drop off taken care of, you can now address the actual laundry room. The laundry room is a great multifunctional room, and can be used to store cleaning supplies, extra utilities such as batteries and extension cords. It's a great spot to keep your hurricane supplies handy too! Decide what items you need to store in the laundry room and then it's time to create a spot for each item. This is where the fun begins! Once you have a spot for each item you can choose baskets or bins that you like to look at and put the items in there. Don't forget to label it so everyone knows what is inside.
Tip #3: Add Valuable Space with Vertical Storage
You might be thinking that your laundry room just isn't large enough to hold anything beyond your laundry supplies. I challenge you to try to add some vertical storage to your space. Stack your machines, add some hooks to the walls, hang your brooms on the wall or add in some tall cabinets that will double, or even triple your storage space. Wall mounted folding hanging racks are another great addition that will take advantage of the vertical space in your room.
You likely spend a lot of time in your laundry room. By creating an organized and functional laundry room, you'll be able to enjoy the time that you spend there.
